Koh Ngai Island in Krabi Thailand

Koh Ngai island - in search of a Tropical Paradise

Getting off the long tail boat on Koh Ngai island, you already realise you're in a tropical paradise. Soft white sand, palm trees, straw beach umbrellas, turquoise sea - this is what this tiny island in Krabi province is like.

The undersea world around Koh Ngai is equally wonderful, with colourful little fish and coral reef.

We arrived on Koh Ngai (Hai) from Koh Lanta Island and we were delighted from the first sight. We only spent two days on the island, but it was a fantastic time to completely chill out after several active days spent in the Khao Sok jungle and on the Cheow Lan Lake

What to do on Koh Ngai island

On Koh Ngai you'll have a rest like nowhere else, as there is nothing on this island apart from a few hotels and the jungle. Not even a road. Instead, there is a wonderful sea with crystal clear turquoise water and a wonderful, long beach with almost white sand. You might be tempted to walk through the jungle to the other side of the island.

There is a coral reef off Koh Ngai, with a magnificent underwater world literally at your fingertips. At low tide, the water at the reef gets up to your knees and it's safe to swim and snorkel there, even with small children. I don't think I've ever spent as much time in the water as I did on Koh Ngai.

From Koh Ngai, it is also possible to take an excursion to the surrounding islands of Koh Kradan and to Koh Muk, where famous Emerald Cave is.

Where to stay on Koh Ngai

Koh Ngai hotel Thanya Beach Resort

There are several hotels to choose from on the island at different rates. We opted for Thanya Beach Resort and I don't think we could have chosen better. Thanya Beach Resort is located on the beach, which is accessible by boat or by making a short jungle walk from Koh Ngai Resort, which is accessible by ferry and speed boats.

The hotel was wonderful, one of the nicest we have been to in Thailand. Perfect for a worry-free holiday. We had a large bungalow with two large beds and an extra bed plus a large, great bathroom with a walk-in wardrobe. On top of that, there was a terrace from which we could admire the warans.

In addition to the magnificent beach, the hotel has a large swimming pool with a children's splash pool. And at the hotel registration desk, there are snorkelling equipment and sand toys for children.

Hotel Thanya Beach Resort

Thanya Beach has a restaurant and a small shop selling snacks, drinks, clothes and essentials.

We ate our meals in the hotel restaurant. They were very tasty, but be prepared for slightly higher prices than on other islands. We paid between 150 and 250 THB for a course and between 65 and 120 THB for drinks.

The daily food cost us an average of THB 2510 for 2 adults and 3 children. At the snack shop we spent 390 THB for various snacks and drinks. You could pay by credit card at the hotel.

When is the best time to come to Koh Ngai Island?

Kiedy przyjechać na Koh Ngai i na wyspy w Krabi

Before you head to Koh Ngai between mid-May and mid-October, make sure the hotels on the island are operating and remain open. The owner who runs the resort on Koh Mook told us that during the rainy season, only the hotels on Mook and one resort on Koh Kradan are open and operating as normal.

The best time to come to Koh Ngai to enjoy the clear and calm sea is from December until April. We were in the first half of April and the weather was overcast.

How to get to Koh Ngai

How to get to Koh Ngai

Koh Ngai Island is located in the Krabi province in the Andaman Sea in close proximity to Koh Kradan and Koh Mook (Trang province) and about 15 km from Koh Lanta. While on Lanta, this island is not to be missed, especially as the transfer from Koh Lanta is very easy and quick.

The island can be accessed by ferries and speed boats between Phuket-Koh Lipe. This route is served by Bundhaya and Tigerline (Sirirlanta). You can also hire private transport.

Ferries do not run to Koh Ngai during the rainy season.

We used the services of Bundhaya Speed Boat. I purchased the tickets a couple of days in advance directly from the operator's website.

We arrived at Koh Ngai from Sala Dan Pier on Koh Lanta island. The speed boat according to the schedule starts at 10.30am, but there was a slight delay. We arrived in 30 minutes and were dropped off at the pier on Koh Ngai, at which a boat was already waiting to disperse passengers to their respective hotels.

The cost of transfers to Koh Ngai depends on the route:

  • Koh Lanta – Koh Ngai: 650 THB per adult (and children over 9 years old), 390 THB (child 3 - 9 years old), children under 3 years old do not pay for the ticket
  • Koh Ngai – Koh Mook: 350 THB per adult (and children over 9 years old), 210 THB (child 3 - 9 years old), children under 3 years old do not pay for the ticket

Travellers from Bangkok can use transfers from Krabi airport or Trang airport. Connections and tickets are available at 12 Go.Asia

How to get off the Koh Ngai island

The return from Koh Ngai is done on a similar basis to the arrival. Our aim was to get to Koh Mook and just after 10.30am a boat arrived to take us to the Ngai pier. There we waited another 20 minutes or so for the speed boat coming from Lanta towards Koh Mook.

During this time, the staff checked the tickets. In our case, the QR code from the booking confirmation from the email was scanned and the baggage stickers were applied. Everything ran smoothly and without any problems. We were now able to get on the speed boat and sail to Koh Mook.

Practical information about Koh Ngai

Ngai is a tiny island in Krabi, with only hotels; you won't find a hospital or pharmacy here. There is also no well-stocked shop or ATM. Take with you a supply of cash, baby items and a first aid kit.

If you need medical attention, you have to go to another island or to the mainland. Just 10 minutes away from Koh Ngai, there is an island Koh Mook, where you can find a clinic. You can also take a quick cruise to Koh Lanta or Trang.
